About

Hi, I’m Beki

beki black and white

I’m hanging out happily between Quarter-life crisis and Mid-life crisis.  I come from a long line of crafters, from the great-great grandmother who supported her 6 children by opening a miliniery shop after her husband died, from the grandmother who taught me the perfect way to wind a ball of yarn by hand and who didn’t ming me rummaging through her fabric stashes to sew myself a few things while I was visiting for the summer, and the aunt to taught all the girls to sew, and my other aunt who did the beadwork on my wedding dress, from the mother who taught me my first embroidery stitches when I was 5 years old and would support us through doing peicework sewing, and who would crochet as she watched TV because she didn’t like sitting still, and the stepmother who did the same.

I’m currently in love with knitting.  Some of my favorite things about it is the rich history behind this particular textile art.  I love learning how things were done or made way back when, and I love being able to do things that men and women have been doing for centuries, like turning the heel of a sock!

I’m also very much fascinated by how things work.  the chemical reactions required to dye a fiber, and the results of the same reaction on different fibers is endlessly enthralling.  I’m hoping to learn more about this as I develop my skills.

I work in London, and live in Essex.  I have two completely fantastic children who always amaze me with their awesomness, and a husband who has been encouraging and supportive of my picking up the knitting needles after a few years without them, and my yarn and dye-related tangents.

I hope you enjoy reading this blog, and coming along with me as I try new things.
