Vintage Knitting pattern booklets – The 50′s (part 2)

I’m sorry its taken a couple of days for me to get these up.  I’m continuing with the photos from Columbia Minerva Fashions for Men and Boys.  (Don’t worry: we’ll have some 50′s fashions for women and girls in the next blog post ;) ).

In the last post, we exhausted all of the photography/film based scenes.  Lets move on to winter sports:

I actually really like the collar on the left.  No idea what’s going on with the pattern for the sweater on the right though.

Going skiing

"Hey! You're doing it wrong!" ... "Do you want to walk to the ski resort?"

Boy, are these guys really enjoying that popcorn.  In a really special way, I’ll bet.

having some popcorn

"Popcorn?"... "Don't mind if I do..."

I’m not sure why these guys are just standing around.  Maybe it’s kiddie-skate time in the rink?  Maybe they’re just watching.  But it makes for a nicely posed photograph, don’t you think?

standing around looking dodgy at the skaing rink

I can't think of a good caption for this one... yaaaaawn...

Well, that’s it for Winter Sports.  What’s up next?  I’m calling this section Leisure Activities.  It’s the sort of thing you’d want young men to do to keep themselves out of trouble.  With a capital T, and that rhymes with P, and that stands for… uh oh…

Nothin wrong with a little hustle

"I can smell a sucker a mile off..." ... "That's my aftershave."

So, if you’re not the hanging out at the pool hall hustling people for money type, you can always try ping-pong.  This next one is actually my favorite.  I’d have captioned it completely differently if I weren’t trying to maintain a mostly PG-rated image for my blog.

ping pong balls

"I'll give you ten dollars to swallow this ping-pong ball"

And what list of leisure activities would be complete without a little voyeurism?  What’s more healthy and wholesome for young boys than spying on your neighbor as she changes in her room?

bird watching. Yeah, that's it!

"If anyone asks, I'm just bird watching."

The last type of photo in this knitting booklet was one I like to call “Hanging out in the study with Dad”  It’s where they get to show the man-size and mini-me versions of the sweaters at the same time.

First, a little reading help for the old man:

Hooked on Phonics worked for me!

" Kuh....Ahhhhh....Tuh. CAAAAAAAT. Cat!" .... "Good Job Dad!"

And lastly:  it’s never too early (especially in the cold war era) to begin indoctrinating your children about world politics:

world superpower

"Right! And which country to the dirty commies want to blow up with their nukes?"

My next entry will still be from the 50′s, but it’s a different pattern booklet.  I’m not going to promise when I’ll post it, because Life Happens.

If anyone can come up with a funnier caption for these pictures, I’ll give some free yarn for it (and this will be separate from the yarn being given away for captioning the pervious post’s pictures – which it looks like Crafycripple is well on her way to winning ;) ).

  1. Mens vintage sweater patterns are always so hilarious, especially the crazy poses! I always threaten my husband that I’m going to knit one of the extra ugly ones for him one day :)

  2. Lol! The popcorn one is my favorite, there’s *definitely* something going on between those two. ok, straightup wittyness is not my forte, but I’ll give it a try for the third pic:
“so, how long do you think it will take little jonny to figure out he’s got cats strapped to his feet instead of skates?”
hmm, sounded funnier in my head …

I have just acquired a number of Workbasket magazines from the same vintage. I can wait to see what goodies are in those. I also rescued a WIP cardigan my mother started in 1967. It is made out of Columbia Minerva 100% acrylic yarn. I hope to finish it up soon.

These were hilarious! Thanks for the fun and keep them coming!
