Makin’ a Joey

For those not fluent in Cockney rhyming slang,  Making a Joey  =  Making a Move.

Yes, yes, I can hear you back there shaking your head and saying, “But joey does not rhyme with move…” You’re right you know; but that’s not how rhyming slang works.  Move rhymes with smooth (if you’re Cockney – smoov innit, bruv?) and there was apparently some guy named Joe Smooth.  So making a move = making a joey. Some of it is more cryptic than all of that, and some of it is easier.

For instance:

You walk up them to get to the floor above. Or down to get to a lower one.

Really though, this blog post isn’t about Cockney Rhyming slang. This is about me making a move. I’m going home. To the US. I’ll be moving in with Mom for a while until I’ve got myself re-established and maybe have saved up enough for my husband to join me there.

It’s always very scary and exciting at the same time when you decide to drastically change your life like this. One thing is I don’t have a job yet there. I’ll be looking once I get there, but the job market in the area I’ll be living is much smaller than the one here. I also have very niche-market IT skills which meant I was able to find work easily in England, but I know the demand for it isn’t as great in the US. I also know that in the US a college degree means a lot more than it does here. I was able to impress people with my actual skills and my experience here. In the US, I’d be lucky to get past the HR gatekeepers to the people who make the hiring decisions without a degree.

I’m not sure yet what I’ll be doing, I just know that I’ll be going near the start of the summer. I’m hoping I can have the cardigan design done by then.

And my mom’s sweater.

and her socks.

and the Dharma logo dish cloths I’m knitting for my Lost Swap buddy.

and the blue thing I’m making for my other swap buddy.

I’d better get knitting!
